Memberships Policies

Membership in the Southern Tier Building Officials Association is organized into specific categories, including:

Active,

Associate,

and Cooperating

to ensure that both public officials and private industry professionals have a dedicated place in our network. To remain a member in good standing, annual dues must be submitted by January 31st, as these contributions directly support our regional advocacy and training programs. We operate on a standard calendar year, and maintaining active status often requires consistent participation in our monthly meetings or educational sessions. Voting privileges are reserved for members in good standing. Professionalism is the cornerstone of our association; therefore, all members are expected to adhere to a strict Code of Ethics that prioritizes public safety and structural integrity. Failure to meet dues deadlines or participation requirements may result in a transition to inactive status, but we offer streamlined reinstatement for those looking to return to the fold. By joining, members commit to continuous professional development, staying at the forefront of the New York State Uniform Code through our collaborative learning environment.

Membership FAQ

Who is eligible to join the Southern Tier Building Officials Association?

Membership is open to a wide range of professionals involved in the building and safety industry. While Active Membership is specifically for municipal building and fire officials currently working for a government agency, we also welcome architects, engineers, contractors, and retired officials through our Honorary membership tier. This diverse mix allows for better collaboration between those enforcing the codes and those designing and building the projects.

Do STBOA meetings count toward my NYS professional development credits?

Yes! One of the primary benefits of membership is access to high-quality educational sessions. Many of our monthly meetings and regional workshops are designed to meet the New York State Department of State (DOS) requirements for continuing education. We strive to provide the necessary credit hours to help our members maintain their active code enforcement certifications without having to travel far from the Southern Tier.

When are annual dues due, and how do I renew my membership?

Membership operates on a calendar-year basis, and annual dues are typically due by January 31st. Timely payment ensures that you remain a "Member in Good Standing," which grants you voting rights (if applicable) and discounted rates for our larger training seminars. To renew, you can download the application form from our website and mail it with a check to our Treasurer, or bring your payment directly to one of our monthly meetings.

Can I attend a meeting if I am not yet a member?

Absolutely. We encourage prospective members or local industry professionals to attend a monthly meeting to see what the STBOA is all about. It’s a great way to network with local officials, stay informed on the latest code interpretations, and decide if the association is the right fit for your professional goals. If you enjoy the session and find the information valuable, we can provide you with an application to join on the spot.
